Abstract
Sustainable urban mobility is among the most important components of improving quality of life in cities, issues of environmental concern, and public health. The book chapter reflects on emerging challenges and opportunities for introducing sustainable urban mobility strategies in developed and developing economies and will consider integrating innovative technologies that could propel sustainable transport systems, such as digital tools for planning and monitoring. It focuses on the health benefits of active modes, like walking and cycling, and local authority capacity building to make sustainable urban mobility effective. It pays special attention to some primary barriers to sustainable urban mobility implementation in terms of institutional fragmentation, financial constraints, and the dependence of society on private vehicles. Case studies from cities such as Durres, Nairobi, and New York offer insights into how successful models of sustainable urban mobility could be established while offering lessons learned and strategies for overcoming common challenges. The future directions include the role of digitalization, increased policy support, and multi-stakeholder collaboration in scaling sustainable urban mobility globally. The book chapter concludes with actionable recommendations for cities seeking long-term sustainability, equity, and improved public health through urban mobility reforms.
