Abstract

Azadirachta indica (Neem) is a well-known traditional medicine in Ayurveda and Unani system and has served as a cornerstone of natural healthcare for decades. Interestingly, every part of neem plant has been utilized for its diverse medicinal properties in the management of diseases such as skin ailments, malaria, diabetes, acne, and bacterial infections. Nutritional aspects of neem plant offer a rich spectrum of proteins, vitamins, minerals, and different bioactive compounds including alkaloids, terpenoids, and flavonoids. Accumulating evidences demonstrate that these compounds have been studied for their potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory properties. In recent years, neem has been evaluated for its crucial role in oral health, displaying comparable efficacy in reducing plaque, gingivitis, and cariogenic bacteria. Studies showed that neem exhibits significant antidiabetic effects, with phytocompounds such as nimbidin, azadirachtin, and stigmasterol modulating glucose metabolism, enhancing insulin secretion, and mitigating oxidative stress. Furthermore, beyond the human health, neem has been evaluated for its biopesticidal compounds and livestock health, aligning with eco-friendly farming practices. Intriguingly, advances in biotechnology have led to the enhanced production of secondary metabolites, paving the way for developing neem-based bioformulations. Taken together, these multifaceted attributes underscore Azadirachta indica as a nutritional and medicinal source of immense potential, warranting continued exploration and integration into modern healthcare and agriculture.
